MIDI

• Synthesizers/ samplers communicate with each other (or with computers) through the use of MIDI.

• MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is an international standard that allows for data to be exchanged among various different MIDI instruments. All MIDI devices, regardless of manufacturer or model, are able to exchange performance data they are both equipped to understand. MIDI converts any event into MIDI data. When sent and received, this data can be used to play another MIDI instrument(s).

A single cable can transmit various sets of information, for a number of devices, using MIDI channels (numbered 1-16 or 17-32). MIDI data consists of two types: Channel messages and systems messages (messages handled independently of channels).

• MIDI channels allow data from the keyboard, pitch wheels, modulation wheels, foot pedals, knobs and buttons to manipulate the sound in real-time, permitting the player control over the instrument during performance.
